If you have braces, you know how uncomfortable they can be sometimes. Luckily, there’s a simple and easy solution to help you out: dental wax! It is also known as braces wax or orthodontic wax and is super handy for those moments of discomfort.
In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about dental wax – what it is, how to use it, and why it’s a lifesaver for people with braces.
What is Dental Wax?
Dental wax, made from beeswax or paraffin, is used to relieve irritation caused by metal brackets and wires. It is available in strips, balls, and pellets, depending on what you prefer.
Wearing braces can be a bit of a pain at first as they can scratch, pinch, or rub against the inside of your mouth.. By creating a barrier between your braces and the soft tissues inside of your mouth, the wax can keep you comfortable until you get used to your new hardware.
How To Use Dental Wax
When dealing with the wax, cleanliness is key. That’s why it’s important to make sure you wash your hands before applying the dental wax. This will help prevent any pesky bacteria from getting into your mouth or existing open sores caused by braces irritation.
Inspect your mouth for any signs of redness or irritation. Once you locate these areas, dry the area with a cloth or paper towel to make it easier for the wax to stick onto your braces. Soften a small amount of wax by rolling it into a ball. The warmth of your hands will soften the wax, making it more malleable.
Once it is moldable, place the small piece of wax on the brackets or wires that are causing the pain. Gently push it into the area until it creates a smooth barrier from the sharp edges of your braces.
Be sure to change the wax frequently, preferably twice daily or whenever it falls off naturally. If you happen to swallow the wax accidentally, there is no need to worry as it is safe to ingest and non-toxic. However, it is best to avoid eating or drinking with the wax in place to prevent it from becoming dislodged or affecting the taste of your food. Remember that even though it can be swallowed, it is not recommended to do so.
In case you have a bracket or wire that is loose because your teeth have shifted or the wire has come out of place, applying wax can provide temporary relief. However, it is important to contact our office for a comfort adjustment or to have the bracket re-bonded.
